Ellu Thovayal (Sesame Chutney)
Description: This chutney gives you more calcium than a glass of milk. Packed with calcium, flavor, and comfort, it’s best enjoyed with hot rice and a drizzle of sesame oil.
Ingredients
- 1.5 tbsp channa dal
- 2 tbsp urad dal
- 1 tsp jeera
- 3 garlic cloves
- 3–4 dry red chilies
- 4 tbsp sesame seeds
- 2 tbsp grated coconut
- 1 sprig curry leaves
- a small piece of tamarind
- salt
- a little water
- sesame oil or ghee
Instructions
- Heat a little oil in a pan.
- Add channa dal, urad dal, jeera, garlic cloves, and dry red chilies, and roast until golden.
- Add sesame seeds and sauté until they start to pop.
- Add grated coconut, curry leaves, and tamarind, sauté for 2 minutes and switch off the heat.
- Let this cool.
- Transfer to a blender with some salt and a little water and blend into a coarse paste.
- Serve with a drizzle of sesame oil or ghee.
